Looking at estimated figures* and it appears that despite numbers of gamers simply not liking Treyarch's efforts with the Call of Duty franchise, their latest effort Call of Duty Black Ops has surpassed that of Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 on the PS3 despite a year gap in market presence.
What's more, Black Ops also has its sights on the Xbox 360 version of MW2 with a mere estimated 100,000 difference separating the two. That's some mightily impressive ground covered for the cold war shooter. Activision must be laughing all the way to the bank as their totals hover around the 14.5 million mark on Xbox 360 and almost 10 million on PS3.
Modern Warfare 2 released worldwide in November 2009 to much fanfare and praise, breaking records and being regarded as a quality release (currently sporting a Metacritic rating of 94/100 for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions). One year on and Treyarch's Black Ops stole the show with its cold war story and impressive multiplayer options (currently sporting a Metacritic rating of 87/100 for the Xbox 360 version and 86/100 for the PS3).
So, credit has to be given to Activision for their continued and tactical marketing of Black Ops which has stayed in the top tiers of the charts fluctuating constantly, but always being there in the background, and with the release of new maps keeping it fresh in gamers minds.
Looking at the Xbox Live stats, and well, what can we say as Activision's games are well represented. Black Ops at the top, with MW 2 in second place. What's next? Will their new game released later this year continue the trend?
