Modern games have been creating a lot of angry gamers by simplifying their games down in order to appeal to the more casual gamer. In today’s live Q & A with Rod Fergusson, the executive producer of the Gears of War franchise, we learned how Gears of War 3 plans on making the game more inviting to new players without sacrificing anything that makes Gears a franchise we love.
When Rod was asked if there is a new feature in Gears 3 that he wishes would have been introduced earlier on in the series, he revealed the new casual mode in Gears 3 multiplayer. When you enter a ranked match, you will be given an option to play against standard or casual competition. The causal mode is designed so that players who are new to the franchise won’t be overwhelmed by pro players and will continue to enjoy the game. In order to play the casual mode, you will have to go through a check. The game will check and see if you have played Gears 1, Gears 2 or participated in the Gears 3 beta. If so, you will not be allowed to enter a casual game match.
The mode is to make it so that you’re playing with others who have an equivalent skill level. Rod used the NBA as an example. If you like to play basketball, would you rather play against guys who have the skill level of NBA players or the guys at your gym?
