Subject: 343 Industries explains Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary multiplayer Sat Jul 23, 2011 8:42 am
343 Industries is remaking Halo: Combat Evolved with a new graphics engine but keeping the same gameplay engine in the Anniversary edition for the Xbox 360. However, the online multiplayer component is being powered by the Halo: Reach engine which has caused some concern with fans. 343's Frank O'Connor explains the reason for the change.
"The most significant change was the multiplayer component," O'Connor told Gamespot in an interview at the San Diego Comic-Con. "We had to do this in a fairly compressed time schedule. And we looked at the original Halo multiplayer engine, it wasn't built to do anything except system link and making the engine work across Xbox LIVE, it would have been possible but it would have been a massive undertaking."
O'Connor continued by saying, "We also looked at the Reach player based and realized we didn't want to further fracture the existing player base so we decided to make the multiplayer in the Reach engine. Everything launches on one disk. You don't have to own Reach to play these seven new multiplayer maps."
A massive title update to Halo: Reach is planned.for November that will add "significant functionality" for Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary to support the maps and new game modes.
